Instagram has grown from a photo and video-sharing app into a full-time social media platform with features like in-app messaging, audio and video conferencing, and even some business tools. Recently, Instagram also released a co-watching feature that allows users to share videos during calls.  However, there have been reports from some users who encounter issues using Instagram calls on their Android devices.  Most of the time, this issue is caused by server downtimes and slow network connections. On the other hand, it can also be due to corrupted data, improper configurations, and third-party apps.  In this guide, we will show you what to do if Instagram calls are not working on your Android device.  Let’s jump right in!

1. Check Instagram Servers.

Before tweaking your configurations, we recommend checking Instagram’s servers first if you encounter issues with its features. You can use third-party sites like Downdetector to view the current status of the servers.  If there are reported problems with the servers, the best option you have is to wait it out. Unfortunately, server-related issues can’t be resolved on your end.  On the other hand, you can head to the next solution if the servers are fine.

2. Restart Your Device.

When you encounter problems with Instagram or any app, it is a good practice to try restarting your device. This should ensure that your resources are correctly loaded, and there are no temporary bugs or glitches in your system.  Here’s what you need to do:  Go back to Instagram afterward and see if the call feature works.

3. Check Your Network Connection.

Slow and unstable connections could also be the reason Instagram calls are not working on your Android device. Like any online platform, Instagram requires decent internet to enjoy its services.  To check if your network is the culprit, perform a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s upload and download bandwidth.  If the result indicates a problem with your connection, power cycle your modem or router to refresh the link with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your router from the outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before plugging it back in.  Once done, re-run the test on your network to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix the issue.

4. Check App Permissions.

Instagram might lack system permission on your device, which causes it to run into errors when you access certain features. To avoid problems, we recommend checking your app permissions and ensuring that Instagram has access to everything it needs.  Here’s what you need to do:  Relaunch Instagram afterward and see if the problem is solved.

5. Disable Data Saver.

Another reason Instagram calls is not working on your Android device is if the data saver feature is enabled. While this help save some cellular bandwidth, it can cause connectivity issues during calls.  See the steps below to disable the data saver:  Try calling one of your friends afterward to check if the problem is solved.

6. Unmute Notification For Calls.

If you’re not receiving notifications whenever someone is calling you, it’s possible that you’ve muted everyone on your friends list and forgotten about it.  Here’s how you can check:  Restart the app and see if you can now receive call notifications.

7. Update Instagram.

The version of Instagram you’re using might have an underlying issue that is related to phone calls and video conferencing. To rule this out, you must update the Instagram app to the latest version possible.  See the steps below to update Instagram:  Try using the call feature on the app again to check if the problem is solved.

8. Clear Instagram Data.

Another way to solve this issue is to clear Instagram’s cache and data. Some of your temporary files may have gotten corrupted, which affected some of the app’s features.  Follow the guide below to clear Instagram’s data:  Re-login to your account and see if you can now use the call feature.

9. Reinstall Instagram.

If none of the solutions above worked, the last thing we can suggest is to reinstall the app on your device. This way, we can ensure that Instagram is installed correctly and you have the latest working version.  Check out the steps below to delete Instagram:  Head to the Google Play Store on your device afterward to see install the latest version.  That brings us to the end of our guide on how to fix Instagram calls if they are not working correctly on your Android device.
